Free Summer Institute on Genocide Education
Texas educators may apply now through April 20 for an opportunity to attend a free Texas Summer Institute on Genocide Education. Sponsored by the Texas Holocaust, Genocide, and Antisemitism Advisory Commission (THGAAC) and St. Sarkis Armenian Church in collaboration with The Genocide Education Project (GenEd), this three-day professional learning program is designed to equip teachers to teach the World History TEKS pertaining to genocide.
Participants will use comparative analysis of the genocides perpetrated against Armenians and Cambodians in addition to the Nazi genocides as case studies to learn about best practices, lesson plans, and tools to teach on this topic.
Taking place June 3–6 at the Hall of Lights in Carrollton, the institute will include professional educators from GenEd and the Southern Methodist University Human Rights Program, as well as Armenian and Cambodian community members. The summer institute is open to any secondary (grades 6-12) Social Studies or English Language Arts educators in the state of Texas. Participants will earn professional development credit. Travel reimbursement and hotel accommodation (double occupancy) is available for educators traveling more than 75 miles from Carrollton.
Here’s a tentative schedule:
- Wednesday, June 3: Evening Welcome Reception
- Thursday, June 4: Full-day workshop (pedagogy, methods, lessons, and genocide survivor speakers). Evening free.
- Friday, June 5: Morning workshop, afternoon cultural tour, Armenian “Kef” night (Experience a fun night of Armenian culture, music, food, and dance!)
- Saturday, June 6: Half-day workshop (classroom applications and breakout sessions)
