H-E-B Excellence in Education award winner and Mesquite ATPE member Amanda Still didn’t start her career in education, but she’s drawn on her experience along the way to create connections with all of her students and prepare them for the real world.

ATPE sat down with Amanda to talk about her journey into counseling and what she hopes her students take with them beyond elementary school.

What led you to school counseling?

In high school I was really involved in art, and then in college I discovered art therapy, which led me in a roundabout way back to school counseling.

I started my career in education working in special education in 2008. My students were visual learners, so I was able to lean into my art background to help them communicate and make connections. While working on my master’s in school counseling, I made a move to teaching art.

I really enjoyed being in the classroom and seeing my almost-200 kids a day. What I loved about making the jump to counseling was that I could incorporate the things I loved about art on a more personalized level. It’s amazing how many foundations transferred from the art room into school counseling, such as building relationships, expressing yourself, feeling safe enough to take creative chances, being able to recover from mistakes, problem solving, and making connections.

Do you still use art therapy techniques in your counseling practices today?

I only have a minor in it, so I’m not certified to use art therapy, but a lot of the techniques from teaching art still transfer over. When you have a kid that’s either nervous or quiet, talking face to face can be intimidating. Sometimes offering to just sit and draw with them takes that pressure off by looking down at a drawing or doodling together; it can make difficult conversations feel much more comfortable and relaxed. Art therapy is really about its process over perfection: It doesn’t matter what the final piece looks like; it doesn’t matter that it’s a mess. Just creating something with your hands can be therapeutic.

Has your entire career been in education?

I started in advertising, but I originally went to school to be a children’s book illustrator. When it was time to pick which track I wanted to take, an advertising major recommended advertising for a better chance at finding a job right out of school: I could still do storyboards and illustrate, but I knew I would need a job and wanted to be marketable, so I took the advertising art direction path, and I spent about three years in the field before realizing that it wasn’t where my heart was at.

Are there any other people who really stand out in influencing your career?

It’s pretty special that I have been part of Mesquite ISD since I was in elementary school. I don’t think a year has passed without someone in the district influencing my life or career in one way or another. My high school art teacher was one of my strongest influences growing up, and the art room was my favorite place.

Mesquite has an amazing counseling department with two phenomenal leaders. Both of them are always there to help with anything, from answering “real-quick” questions to helping with anything we bring to them in the moment.

Most importantly, though, I have a great relationship with my principal, and she has had an unbelievable influence on my career. I completely support and love her vision for the school. Our school’s motto is “if it’s best for kids we’re doing it,” and that is the driving force in all her decisions. The culture that she has created reaches beyond just the kids to their parents and to the local community. I am lucky to get to be a part of what she has created.

What keeps you passionate about the profession?

Definitely the kids, as well as the people I work with. My work family is almost as much of my family as my real-life family.

What I love the most about my job—and what I told H-E-B—is I get to be the person someone trusts and comes to on their bad day. I try hard to start building those relationships from the minute the students walk in so that they know my face, what I do, and why I am there, because you don’t want to wait until there is a bad day or an emergency to try to introduce yourself and earn that kind of trust.

Simply put, though, just being the person that is on their side and advocating for them makes every day worth it.

What do you hope first and foremost that students take away from their interactions with you?

There are so many things I hope for my students, but my biggest hope is that every student (or, really, everyone, for that matter, including parents and staff) that visits my office feels heard, and valued. I would never want anyone to feel like they are an imposition, and I hope they leave feel like we have started the problem-solving process.

I would like my fifth graders going into middle school to remember to actually talk to the important people in their life every day and make sure that includes their parents or guardians, not just their friends. I want them to remember to ask questions, not to be scared to take smart chances, and that a mistake is just a single moment of one day—but also we have to learn from those mistakes to make us better.

Mostly I want everyone to find the place they belong in school and do something great with it, and for them to remember they are resilient and can handle really hard things.

Tell me about a success story that stands out to you and illustrates the impact counselors have.

The first one that comes to mind is the grief group that I ran last school year. Originally the group was supposed to last eight weeks, but around week seven, they asked if we could keep meeting even though our time was up. This group ran almost all the way through the school year. They had formed this little community, which was so important because all their losses were fairly recent, so it was still very new and fresh to them.

At first, I did most of the facilitating, but by the end they were making new connections and even making strides at home. Their parents said communication had improved—from one-word answers to full-on conversations—that was one of the big ones.

One of the things I am really proud of at school is our daily morning meeting videos. It is based on our district’s four promises. I record a short two- to three-minute video that prompts conversation in the classroom. The students even come up to me during the day mentioning the conversations or sharing their ideas from the meetings. Teachers have expressed how it has built a family-like community in their class. One teacher told me it gave her the chance to learn so much about her students she would not have known, and the students realized how much more they had in common than they realized. It has helped teach empathy and grow a sense of belonging.

One of my other favorite things is when a kid makes a breakthrough in communication at home. If they’ve had a hard day, I always reach out to their parents, and sometimes the kids get nervous about it. I reassure them it’s just a talk and offer to let them sit in the conversation while I speak to their parents. The best part is when they come back the next day, and say, “I had the best talk last night.” It’s impactful when they realize they can go home and have the same type of conversations that they’re having with me with their parents. That way they know they’re supported all around and always have someone to turn to.

What are your key guiding principles as a counselor?

Relationships and communication: teaching people how to be better listeners because so many of the things that we struggle with are based on assumptions.

It’s important to get all the pieces of the puzzle because there are so many more sides to the story than what we see when a student walks in the door. Instead of jumping to conclusions, we need to talk to everyone involved because everybody has a different perspective and a different piece of that puzzle.

I try to teach kids from as early as possible the way we talk to ourselves matters and that we are harder on ourselves than we are on anyone else. I’ll ask a student: “Would you talk like that to your best friend?” And when they say no, I ask, “Then why are we talking like that to ourselves?” It’s such an important skill that even as adults we struggle with all the time.

Another foundational tool that I rely on often is being able to stay calm and help deescalate a situation or student when they are having a hard time. Getting the student calm takes patience and not reacting, but it’s after they take that deep breath when they regulate that the magic happens. When the student has found their balance and is in a place to talk and really process what happened, some of the best learning has happened in that moment.

Tell us about the application process for the H-E-B Excellence in Education Award.

It really started when I nominated my principal for the H-E-B Excellence in Education Award, and she was named North Texas Elementary Principal of the year. We actually got to go through this whole process together, which made the whole thing 10 times more amazing and special.

One of my former co-counselors nominated me, and I didn’t even know until I got the email saying, “Congratulations, you’ve been nominated; please complete this application.” The application questions were thorough and deep. Parts of the application made me stop and think about all of the different aspects of my job that I just do every day. You don’t really get the chance to take the time to stop and look at these moments through a microscope because you are already moving on to the next thing. It also held room to look for the moments worth celebrating you almost take for granted.

How did you react when you learned you had won the award?

The entire H-E-B awards weekend was absolutely magical. They were the absolute best host and made everyone there feel so valued and important the entire weekend. I have never experienced anything like it. During our section of the awards ceremony, as I crossed the stage after they introduced us, all I remember thinking was, “Enjoy this because it is over.” Then I heard them call the start of my school’s name—I heard them say the first name of my school, “Charles,” and after that, all I could hear was my heartbeat—I didn’t even hear them actually say my name. When I got up to give my speech, I couldn’t read it because my eyes were full of tears, and I remember thanking H-E-B the best I could, and I told everybody how much I loved every part of it. I know I’ll never have another year like this year, and the whole time I kept that at the forefront of my mind so that I’d enjoy every little bit of the experience.

What does it mean to win this award from H-E-B?

Everyone loves H-E-B, but the best part is that H-E-B loves us back, and I do remember I mentioned that in my speech. I love how much they celebrate educators, how much they support education and our students, and how much they love the people in Texas in general. I appreciate beyond words that H-E-B shines this light on the educators who often pour their whole lives into and give so much of their hearts to their students and campuses. Being named H-E-B elementary school counselor still feels like a dream I haven’t woken up from in the best way possible.

What does being a member of ATPE mean to you?

It’s like having these wonderful and supportive friends in your corner who are always there, somebody who always has your back, and knowing we’re being advocated for because there’s so many pieces that are always changing and [ATPE is] making sure that educators are heard and seen. And then the other piece is that it feels like this great safety net, like I can go and do my job to the very best of my ability.

How does the district support your work? What practices really stand out?

The district pours so much into our counselors and counseling department. We’ve just opened our second CARE clinic, which is a free counseling center for any Mesquite ISD student. The CARE Clinic provides extra counseling needs if a student needs to talk to a counselor regularly. They’re all licensed professional counselors, some of whom volunteer their time, and an amazing resource. When we see students struggling beyond the support that can be offered on the campus level, it gives us a place to offer more help or services for students and their families. I work really hard to build strong relationships with parents, and when they hear the CARE Clinic is part of the district, they already trust it. It makes all the difference in the world in getting the next steps in help for their students.

If you could share one message with educators, parents, and students across Texas, what would it be?

Build relationships from day one, and ask good questions and really listen to the answers. Spend time with each other, talk, play games together, don’t be scared to apologize, and make genuine connections—because every single kid is worth getting to know and has an interesting story to tell.

Congratulations to Amanda on this well-deserved recognition—we wish her continued success throughout her career!

It is the largest employer in the county.”

Renetzky credits ATPE staff members, such as recently retired Membership Specialist Ginger Franks, with helping her initially navigate the roles and responsibilities of her office. However, she also began taking advantage of every opportunity ATPE offered to help build her skills and knowledge, including attending region meetings and the ATPE Summit.

“Summit was way more than I expected,” Renetzky says. “I received a wealth of information. I was blown away by all the different things that I learned about ATPE. It was a huge training experience for me.”

She also applied and was accepted to the 2025-26 cohort of Leadership ATPE. She noted the experience has helped her to develop some of her skills needed to serve as a local unit president.

“I feel like I’m a very good speaker,” she says. “I have very good communication skills, but it made me aware of things that I didn’t even realize I was missing. Leadership ATPE taught me to think about new ways to improve my communication and become a better leader moving forward because my goal is to continue to serve ATPE.”

Spreading the Word About ATPE

Renetzky recalled that even before she started serving as president, she looked forward to the opportunity to recruit new members to Conroe ATPE.

“I’ve always been a huge recruiter, and I actually really like marketing,” she says. “So, I was very excited to take on that challenge because I just wanted to spread the word. I really wanted to get ATPE’s name out there in front of people. I want to let people know we’re here.”

Because Conroe ISD is spread over a large geographic area, Renetzky said she has worked to plan a number of in-person recruiting and social events. She added that this strategy has already yielded positive results.

“I started planning get-togethers at local restaurants just to see who would show up,” Renetzky says. “I’ve gotten members every time I’ve held an after-school event at a restaurant where we just offered appetizers and sodas. I am always asking members where their favorite restaurant is near campus because I want to continue hosting these events.”

The local unit has also worked closely with the district to create opportunities to let educators know about ATPE.

“We sponsor the breakfast at the district’s new-teacher orientation,” she says. “We provide breakfast tacos for about 800 or so new teachers. We have done that for the past several years.”

Renetzky said she is also excited about a new idea that not only raises awareness about ATPE but also gives members the opportunity to give back to the community.

“This is the second year I have created an opportunity for members to volunteer at The Woodlands Marathon,” she says. “We are the largest employer in the county, and we want the community to know about us. With my background as a PE teacher and in fitness, I have run races and volunteered at races. We had a water station last year. We put up an ATPE poster, and it was a great opportunity for us to do community service. I want to do more of that.”

Renetzky has seen steady progress toward her goal of building a stronger local unit. However, she knows there is more work to do.

“We’ve been growing a little, but not as substantially as I would like to see yet, especially because I know what’s possible with Conroe ATPE,” she says. “It may take some time, but I’m not going anywhere.”

This article was updated after publication to reflect minor clarifications and revisions.

A constant visible presence on campus

Castillo has served as a Valley View (1) ATPE officer for approximately five years, first as secretary and now as president. She says recruiting new members starts with establishing a visible presence on campus early in the school year. The goal is to ensure both members and nonmembers understand how ATPE is ready to serve them.

“We want to start the year off letting members know we exist in every way possible,” Castillo says. “We aim to use all the tools available, including emails, text messages, WhatsApp, Facebook, and more. We want to remind them they have an association that is there for them.”

For Castillo, communication is vital to growing and maintaining membership. She says using multiple communication channels not only helps volunteer leaders share important information more effectively but also allows the local unit to tailor messages to each of Valley View ISD’s unique campus communities.

“Each campus has its own personality,” Castillo says. “We have asked our campus representatives to create a WhatsApp group with members at their school. Whenever we have news or a message to send, we will email it and post it on social media. We will also send a WhatsApp message. These messages can feel more personal, and they go directly to members’ phones so you know if they have read it or not.”

Castillo says the local unit also creates monthly newsletters distributed via email. These newsletters allow them to share important information about the local unit, including summaries of previous meetings, school board updates, and details about upcoming events. They also share information about ATPE benefits, such as member discounts and professional development opportunities. It is another tool they use to remain a visible presence in the lives of members.

While Castillo believes these methods help members feel connected to a community, she emphasizes that the best way to connect with people is in person.

“It is important to make yourself present in person on your campus,” Castillo says. “Let people know you are one of the ATPE officers. When they know you personally, it is easier for them to feel a connection to ATPE.”

Building community to increase retention

Effective communication and visibility are key strategies to help recruit new ATPE members, but Castillo and her officers know that it is equally as important to retain existing members. To show appreciation, the local unit makes a point to recognize returning members.

“In the beginning of the year, we will try and put together a little tote bag or some type of appreciation gift for returning members,” Castillo says. “For example, we give tote bags to the first 100 members that sign up through a Google form we distribute.”

Additionally, the local unit hosts frequent events that allow members to gather together and build a sense of community. Castillo says they also use these events to show their appreciation for both current and prospective members. The local unit conducts a drawing for a Thanksgiving turkey dinner for a family of six to eight, as well as gift card drawings for both existing and new members at the Christmas meeting.

For Castillo, the work of building community extends beyond recruitment and retention. It has also been personally meaningful.

“As an officer, I have an extra family in ATPE,” Castillo says. “I have my personal family, my blood family, my school family, and my church family, but this feels like another family, too.”

When Vickiela Wright learned she had been named Texas Teacher of the Year, she responded with gratitude and a renewed sense of purpose.

“It’s been a whirlwind,” Wright said. “But you get this award, and you continue to work. It hasn’t changed who I am as an individual.”

Wright teaches fifth grade English language arts and social studies at McWhirter Elementary School in Clear Creek ISD. Now in her 16th year as an educator, she also serves as a grade-level instructional coach and team lead, as well as a mentor to fellow teachers. The Teacher of the Year honor brings a statewide, and now national, platform, but the work behind it has been building for years.

“You can’t teach a student until you have met them here,” Wright said, pointing to the heart. “Once you meet them there, everything else follows.”

That belief was shaped long before Wright ever stepped into a classroom as a teacher.

Finding her voice

Wright was raised in Chicago by her great-grandmother, who was born and raised in Puerto Rico and pulled out of school at 13. Despite never completing her own education, Wright’s great-grandmother held an unwavering belief in its power.

“She had this deep belief that if you had an education, you could do anything in the world,” Wright said. “She’s my biggest inspiration.”

By third grade, Wright already knew she needed more from school than she was receiving. “I didn’t fit the cookie-cutter mold,” she said. She remembers struggling to read and stealing a basal reader because she wanted access to the stories inside. Growing up in low-income housing, she could feel assumptions being made about what students like her could become.

“From that point, I started to realize that I need more; I want more,” she said.

That relationship with school did not fully change until high school, when Wright joined JROTC and met First Sgt. Harper. “He told me, ‘I see something in you, and you can do anything you put your mind to,’” Wright said. “He invested in me in ways that I never thought anyone would.”

The structure and belief Harper provided reshaped her view of education and clarified her path forward. “Because of these two people who had poured so much into me, I needed to go and pay it forward,” Wright said.

Leading by listening

Today, Wright’s classroom philosophy centers on listening before leading.

“If we slow down and we listen to our students—not what we want them to say, but what they actually have to say—you gain this whole different experience,” she said. “You gain this whole different view of what that student needs.”

That approach guides how she teaches literacy. Wright is quick to acknowledge that today’s students engage with the world differently than those she taught even a decade ago.

“These students aren’t the students that we were teaching 10 years ago,” she said. “My students are in love with social media, songs, and TikTok.”

Rather than resist that reality, Wright builds instruction around it. “Students love to write,” she said. “I let them write the things that they want to write about, and then I work to restructure it to fit within the curriculum. It’s all about choice.”

In practice, that might mean connecting a favorite song to a reading assignment or allowing students to start with personal interests before guiding them toward academic goals. The engagement comes first, Wright said, and everything else builds from there.

A classroom built on trust

Choice extends beyond writing assignments and into the physical space of Wright’s classroom.

“This year I made huge changes,” Wright said. “One of the biggest changes that I knew that my students needed was flexible seating.”

After asking students what helped them learn best, Wright worked with them to test seating options and ultimately replaced every seat in the room with support from the campus PTA. Students can now choose where they sit and transition between standard and more comfortable seating. Wright also created a cozy reading corner and adjusted lighting to create a calmer environment.

“When they come to my classroom, I want them to feel like it’s their second home,” she said.

That comfort is paired with responsibility. Students help manage classroom systems and learn how to advocate for themselves. “They know they’re allowed to get up and relocate to get their best learning,” Wright said. “We all learn differently, and I want them to know that I see them.”

Wright said this sense of ownership builds leadership early and prepares students to make thoughtful decisions about their learning.

Growth through reflection

Wright credits National Board Certification with deepening her practice and sharpening her focus on the whole child.

“National Board has changed my life,” she said. After more than a decade in the profession, the process pushed her out of her comfort zone and forced her to reflect more intentionally. “You take a really deep look into the student as a whole so that you are able to push the student to grow. No two students are alike.”

That lens shapes her leadership beyond the classroom. As a team lead and instructional coach, Wright said discussions always start with the student. “Before student data, how’s the student feeling? What’s going on with the student?” she said. “It’s all interconnected.”

Even challenges like shifting expectations and increased technology use are framed as opportunities. “Our pendulum is always swinging,” Wright said. Rather than viewing that as a setback, she sees it as a reminder that teaching requires constant growth. “It’s really a time for me to grow and learn how to use technology more to my advantage,” she said.

Asked what her students have taught her this year, she smiled. “Don’t stop believin’,” she said.

Students write affirmations to themselves during exams and fill their folders and notes with encouragement. Wright keeps a folder her students customized for her filled with messages reminding her to speak confidently and keep going.

“There are hard days for me too,” Wright said. “But when you walk into that classroom and you’re hit with some hugs and some ‘You got this,’ that completely changes the trajectory of the day.”

Outside the school day, Wright sponsors Student Council and leads extracurricular initiatives, such as Chill and Chat and Spirit Squad, often giving up her lunch period to build relationships with students. “Chill and Chat gives them that time to connect,” she said, particularly for students who may feel isolated or new to campus. The space has also sparked student-led clubs and leadership opportunities.

“We don’t set limits,” Wright said. “Anything that you put out there for a student to do, they can reach it.”

As Texas Teacher of the Year, Wright is using her platform to advocate for what teachers need beyond supplies. “I’m talking about the trainings,” she said. “What we were doing five years ago, it’s not going to work for these new students.”

She also wants decision-makers to hear teachers’ full stories. “The most beautiful part about this is being able to share my journey,” Wright said. “My journey is the journey of a lot of other teachers out there, too.”

Back in her classroom, the recognition has made Wright something of a celebrity. Students Google her and jokingly offer pens for autographs when visitors arrive. Wright laughs and gently redirects the attention.

“I tell them this isn’t just my work,” she said. “This is all of us.”

For Wright, the honor does not signal a finish line. It signals a wider reach, rooted in the same belief that has guided her from the beginning: Meet students where they are, listen first, and don’t stop believing in what they can become.
